3 Benefits of a Water Filtration System

Drinking filtered water may get taken for granted by some, but in reality, the privilege that we all share to enjoy the benefits of filtered water is something to be thankful for. Water filtration can be a very layered, complex process. As consumers, we should assess the cleanliness and purity of water thoroughly, and make sure we are doing everything possible to ensure we are bringing properly filtered water into our households, offices, and buildings.

World-renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kevin R. Stone once said, “Drinking water is like washing out your insides. The water will cleanse the system, fill you up, decrease your caloric load, and improve the function of all your tissues.” This visually specific, yet accurate quote reminds us to strive to put the best possible forms of hydration in our body and to remember the three key benefits of drinking filtered water.

  • There are many different kinds of filters to choose from
  • There are many harmful total dissolved solids that a water filtration system can remove
  • There are many health benefits of drinking filtered water

Benefit #1: What are the different types of water filtration systems?

There are many different ways to filter water. The average homeowner, renter, or office manager is likely looking for something that can be used to assist in delivering clean, filtered water to their family or co-workers. However, larger commercial spaces or industrial plants need a water filtration system with the ability to cleanse larger volumes of water. There are ten different types of water filtration systems based on different types of needs the market encounters.

Sediment Filtration: This is the standard for water filtration systems, and is seen in many homes, offices, and buildings. Removes sediment, not chemicals or heavy metals; no impact on taste or smell.

Activated Carbon Block (ACB) Filtration: Positively charged activated carbon reacts to bind with negatively charged chemicals which removes odor and bad taste. Great for organics.

Granular Activated Carbon Filtration: Larger carbon granules help commercial water filtration performance. This water filter system is ideal for industrial use. Great for organics and VOC’s.

Reverse Osmosis: In reverse osmosis filtration, water molecules are imposed through a semipermeable membrane to a less concentrated solute than it originated from. This technical process offers some of the strongest protection against contaminants in water.

Distillation: Another system better suited for industrial use, distillation heats water to a boiling point using electrical energy, for the steam to then condense into its purified version. The operation time for a small output of purified water makes this system inefficient for individual households.

Ion-Exchange: The ion-exchange chemical process can go one of two ways -- the positively charged cation exchange process or the negatively charged anion exchange process. ZeroWater products use a mixed bed ion-exchange system of both cations and anions. This deionizes the water.

Ultraviolet Disinfection: Ultraviolet light has been known to be able to kill about 99% of all germs in the water.

Ultrafiltration: A very tight 0.01 - 0.5 microns hollow fiber filters out most of the contaminants of water as the fluid is pushed through ultrafiltration technology. Similar to Reverse Osmosis except in terms of the size of the molecules it retains.

Activated Alumina Filtration: Highly absorbent porous aluminum oxide removes fluoride, arsenic, and other damaging chemicals. It’s commonly seen in home-filtration systems that treat tap water with large amounts of fluoride.

Ionization: Water ionization rejuvenates the water molecular structure to produce antioxidant-filled alkaline water that is suitable for consumption. With the flexibility to adjust the output, ionization filters can provide a pH water range of 3 - 12.

ZeroWater has leveraged the ion-exchange filtration method in a way that no other company has, with our Premium 5-Step Ion Exchange Water Filtration System. While most companies use the standard and outdated 2-step system, the 5-step ion-exchange system mastered by ZeroWater delivers cleaner, better-tasting water.

  • Step 1: The water travels through the coarse filter screen
  • Step 2: The water then passes through the foam distributor
  • Step 3: The carbon and oxidation reduction alloy are activated
  • Step 4: The ion exchange resin cleanses the water
  • Step 5: The water smoothly passes through the ultra-fine screen that will catch any final impediments.

Benefit #2: What Toxins Can A Water Filtration System Remove?

Total Dissolved Solids, or “TDS,” are compounds that dissolve in water. TDS can include a lot of different chemicals, such as calcium, magnesium, and sodium chloride. When the TDS levels in your water increase, it can affect the appearance, taste, and smell of your water. The lower the TDS score, the better your water.

In urban areas and cities where district-wide water sources are legislated, governed, and distributed, the battle against TDS is never-ending. TDS can include minerals, metals, salts, anions, cations, salts, and more. Any one of these in any capacity can do damage to a human’s health. So where do they come from and how do they continue to penetrate our precious water sources?

Land Pollution: In the modern world of water distribution, H2O sometimes has to travel a great distance to reach the tap. This can include crossing city, county, and state lines. Inevitably, agricultural runoff can seep into the water source.

Urban Pollution: Industrial pollution, although to a lesser extent than land pollution, is a notable source of contamination as well. As well as an elected government may try to protect a city water source, there is bound to be human error and equipment failure that can damage the water.

TDS can be minor in its size, but major in its impact. For example, in the Flint, MI water crisis, the government neglected the fact that the system’s withering lead pipes were flooding the water with toxic breakoff of lead. This oversight wreaked havoc on the citizens of Flint, as the long-term consumption of that water was having astoundingly negative health effects.

TDS should never be overlooked or downplayed. Having a safe and trustworthy water system can be a huge benefit to a healthy home, office, and society. ZeroWater believes that everyone should have access to tools that can measure the TDS levels in the water, which is why we include a free TDS meter in every water filter pitcher from ZeroWater, a savings of $20.00.

Benefit #3: The Health Benefits of Drinking Water

This whole article we’ve been explaining how TDS can travel miles and miles to pollute your precious water source, but what is the impact of TDS on the human body, and our day-to-day lives?

Well for one, the peace of mind knowing that you are consuming healthy water will have a huge psychological impact. Food will taste better, workouts will be more enjoyable, and your recommended eight glasses of water a day will be positively impacted by the clean, filtered water delivered to you by ZeroWater products.

However, and perhaps more importantly, the benefits of drinking filtered water are best shown in the health benefits we experience:

    1. Better water will help our body absorb more nutrients
    2. Better water will help detoxify our bodies better, and faster.
    3. Better water helps maintain a safe internal body temperature.
    4. Better water will help hydrate and lubricate your joints.
    5. Better water will improve skin health.

Water is essential to life, and therefore, having it be the best version it can be is a must-have for a healthy lifestyle.
